1941: Where it all began

In 1941, amid the uncertainty faced by Jewish refugees rebuilding their lives in Melbourne, Margarete Arnhold (pictured right) quietly sparked a revolution of compassion. Having arrived from Berlin in 1937, she recognised the loneliness, hardship and cultural dislocation felt by so many, especially those without family.

Instead of looking away, she gathered a small circle of like minded women and formed The Mutual Help, a grassroots network offering meals, clothing, medical support,
and—often most importantly—companionship.

What began with five determined women grew steadily, powered by their resilience and unwavering belief in community care. These women—who had already endured upheaval—channelled their strength into lifting others. Card parties raised funds, a nurse was hired, and a philosophy
of dignity and warmth took root.

“Margarete’s legacy is a reminder that bold, compassionate women can transform a community—one act of kindness at a time.”

EMMY MONASH: A FOUNDER, A LEADER, A LEGACy

Our heritage is deeply rooted in the vision of Mrs Emmy Monash, whose dedication shaped the organisation from its earliest days. Emmy grew up immersed in tradition and the value of tzedakah—principles that guided her throughout her life.

When Emmy was appointed Acting President of then-known The Mutual Help, she quickly became integral to various community engagement initiatives, bringing people together.

One of her most significant contributions was her role in securing Hillcrest, the organisation’s first building—a milestone that underpinned the thriving home that exists today. We will always be deeply grateful for Emmy’s values, leadership and unwavering commitment—the same principles that define our vision today.

Every building tells a story

Since acquiring the Hillcrest building in 1948, Emmy Monash has grown in step with its community and the realities of delivering sustainable aged care. What began as a 25 bed home soon expanded along Dandenong Road, responding to increasing demand from Melbourne’s Jewish community for culturally connected care.

The later construction of Gandel House on Hawthorn Road marked another pivotal moment—extending capacity, modernising care environments and positioning the organisation for the future. Each phase of building has been purposeful, while ensuring Emmy Monash remains relevant, resilient, and community centred.

Today, our 170 bed facility reflects decades of thoughtful investment and forward planning. As community needs continue to shift and new opportunities emerge, further building growth will be considered as part of ensuring Emmy Monash can continue to serve, adapt and thrive for generations to come.

“The design of our buildings has always mattered. What counts is that every space is secure, well planned, and supports residents and staff to live and work well every day.”
